The wines from Montepulciano in southern Tuscany have always played second fiddle to wines from its neighbouring town, Montalcino. Partly, I suspect, due to confusion with the often-mass-produced wines from Abruzzo, made from the grape of the same name. Avignonesi have blazed the trail and it’s hard to think of a more inspirational, better-run estate in the world of wine. The entire property practices organic and biodynamic viticulture with a clear goal of expressing the terroir and characteristics of each vineyard.
They experiment constantly with different clones of Sangiovese and other varieties and have begun fermenting and ageing much of their production in amphora made from locally sourced clay instead of oak. All of their wines are imbued with an understated elegance, purity and polish. True Tuscan thoroughbreds. And they make one of the greatest sweet wines on the planet!

The sediments you might find in this wine show that it is made of pure Sangiovese with minimal intervention. The deposit is due to its high content of a natural antioxidant called quercetin, which is perfectly safe. This is not a flaw, it is a characteristic of the pure Sangiovese.
