Located in the Bot River ward of the Walker Bay district, Beaumont Family Wines is one of South Africa’s most respected family-run wineries, known for its deep sense of place, historical roots, and benchmark expressions of Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. The farm, Compagnes Drift, is one of the oldest in the region, originally built as a trading post by the Dutch East India Company in the 1700s.
Since acquiring the property in 1974, the Beaumont family has restored and developed the estate into a terroir-driven, low-intervention wine producer with a distinctive style. Under the stewardship of Sebastian Beaumont, the estate continues to refine its expressions, producing wines with purity, elegance, and authenticity.
Beaumont is heavily influenced by maritime breezes from Walker Bay and the Elgin plateau. The vineyard sites are characterized by a complex mix of soils -decomposed shale, clay, and granite- that retains water well, contributing to even ripening and structural depth. The climate is moderate with diurnal temperature shifts that preserve acidity and aromatics—ideal for white varietals like Chenin Blanc and red varietals like Mourvèdre and Pinotage.
Sustainability is a core value at Beaumont, with practices aligned with the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) standards and a commitment to preserving the natural fynbos-rich landscape.
Named after Sebastian's grandmother, the Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc is crafted from the estate's oldest Chenin Blanc vines, planted in 1974. The wine undergoes fermentation in older French oak barrells, resulting in a complex and nuanced expression of Chenin Blanc.
The elegant Jackal’s River Pinotage is known for its red berry and ripe fruit flavours, complemented by fine tannins and a balanced palate. The 2011 vintage was notably praised by wine critic Jancis Robinson as one of the best Pinotages she had ever tasted.
