The Story

This is a small, boutique winery run by the French-Danish Rousset family that resettled here from Mauritius. They stumbled upon the Elgin valley whilst looking for a special needs school for their son, and were captivated by the quality and potential of winemaking here. Elgin is a cool, fertile, agricultural valley where the vines grow alongside wild flowers, apples, pears and olives. Idun is the Norse goddess of eternal life, fertility and apples (over 60% of South Africa’s apples are grown here and are exported worldwide) so the name of the estate came naturally. Not to be outdone by apples, the wine from this region is outstanding and the estate produce a range of sleek and classy wines.

The grapes ripen slowly due to the 350m elevation and a cool Mediterranean climate resulting in world-class wines with a rare delicacy, fragrance and elegance. The Syrah in particular is extraordinary value, with a distinct nod to the northern Rhone.
