The Story

Lyrarakis Winery, located in the mountainous region of Alagni in central Crete, is a benchmark producer known for its dedication to indigenous grape varieties and its pivotal role in the modern revival of Cretan viticulture. Founded in 1966 and still family-run, the estate has become internationally respected for its focus on high-altitude, single-varietal expressions and site-specific bottlings.

The Lyrarakis vineyards sit at elevations between 400–800 metres above sea level, benefiting from significant diurnal shifts and cooling Aegean breezes—helping to preserve acidity and aromatic precision. The winery cultivates a range of native grapes including Vidiano, Vilana, Mandilari, Kotsifali, and Plytó, as well as the once nearly extinct varieties Dafni and Melissaki, which Lyrarakis has played a key role in rescuing and reintroducing.

Vinification combines modern technology with a light-touch, terroir-driven philosophy. Whites are typically fermented in stainless steel to retain varietal purity, while select cuvées see time in oak for added texture and complexity. Reds are vinified with a focus on balance and varietal clarity, often undergoing gentle extraction and aging in neutral barrels or amphorae.

All of the wines are marked by freshness, typicity, and a clear sense of place, offering insight into Crete’s diverse terroir and historic varieties.
